Sharing the Love is a program that donates prom dresses directly to high schools in Oregon and Washington for distribution to its students.

The primary goal is to get prom dresses into the hands of students who would like them but cannot attend our annual Abby’s Closet Giveaway event, as they reside over 90 minutes or 100 miles away from Portland. We also strive to reach communities that are under-served.

Note:  If your school is located in the Portland-metro area or less than 90 minutes away from Portland by car, we ask that you strongly encourage students to attend the Prom Dress Giveaway at the Oregon Convention Center on March 6-7, as there will be over 5,000 dresses available to choose from.

Sharing the Love began in 2018. In its first two years, over 2,000 dresses were donated to high schools and nonprofit organizations in Oregon and Washington. In 2020, due to the global pandemic, the annual Prom Dress Giveaway event was canceled and STL became our primary giveaway program. Over 2,300 dresses were donated to 20 high schools that year. Abby’s Closet has donated over 10,000 dresses through the Sharing the Love program so far!

INFORMATION ABOUT THe PROGRAM

  • Applications for STL must be submitted by a staff member of the school or organization.

  • As there are a limited number of dresses to donate, Abby’s Closet will review applications and decide which schools will be the recipients. Schools selected to receive donations will be notified in mid-February.

  • Each school will receive between 25-200 dresses, based on enrollment or specific request.

  • The dresses will be on hangers and packed in boxes, with approximately 25 dresses in each box.

  • The donations can be picked up at the Oregon Convention Center on Friday, March 6th or Saturday, March 7th. Arrangements can also be made to pick them up in the Tualatin area on a different date.

  • The dresses will be in various sizes, styles and colors. Note: We will do our best to ensure there are some dresses in all sizes, but the majority will be in sizes 4-14.

  • Once the dresses are donated to the schools, it is up to the individual schools to decide how the dresses are distributed to students. Note: We can share ideas and information on how other schools have successfully distributed dresses, if needed.
