Sharing the Love is a program that donates prom dresses directly to high schools in Oregon and Washington for distribution to its students.

The primary goal is to get prom dresses into the hands of students who would like them but cannot attend the Abby’s Closet Prom Dress Giveaway, as they reside two hours or more away from Portland. We also strive to reach communities that are under-served.

STL began in 2018. In its first two years, over 2,000 dresses were donated to high schools and nonprofit organizations in Oregon and Washington. In 2020, due to the global pandemic, the annual anticipated event was canceled and STL became our primary giveaway program. Over 2,300 dresses were donated to 20 high schools that year. Abby’s Closet has donated over 10,000 dresses through the STL program so far!

Note:  If your school is located in the Portland metro area, or less than two hours away from Portland by car, we ask that you strongly encourage students to attend the Abby’s Closet Prom Dress Giveaway at the Oregon Convention Center, as there are over 7,000 dresses available to choose from.

INFORMATION ABOUT THe PROGRAM

  • Applications for STL must be submitted by a staff member of the school or organization.

  • As there are a limited number of dresses to donate, Abby’s Closet will review applications and decide which schools will be the recipients.

  • Each school will receive between 25-200 dresses, based on enrollment or specific request. 

  • The dresses will be on hangers and packed in boxes, with approximately 25 dresses in each box.

  • The donations can be picked up at the Oregon Convention Center, or arrangements can be made to pick them up in the Tualatin area on a different date.

  • The dresses will be in various sizes, styles, and colors. Note: We will do our best to ensure there are some dresses in all sizes, but the majority will be in sizes 4-14.

  • Once the dresses are donated to the schools, it is up to the individual schools to decide how the dresses are distributed to students. Note: We can share ideas and information on how other schools have successfully distributed dresses, if needed.
